I was supposed to fly to LA this morning at 640. I hate airplanes/airports and I’m super afraid of flying. So anyway, I get on a tiny plane, but it doesn’t take off cos of a mechanical problem and the flight gets cancelled. They finally get me a new flight around eleven o clock but the flight isn’t until 8 pm. So I’m missing the funeral I was supposed to go to and a whole day in California. Also, I had been ma’amed and missed all day (and the previous night when I went to a concert) so I was feeling alright. But then when I’m trying to get a new ticket, the lady at the counter says to her coworker, ” can you help this…” And she looks me up and down with a frown while she trails off. So, that plus the fact that I was going to be at the airport for nine more hours and my beard was already starting to show, and I was feeling pretty crummy. So I decided to change into guy mode. But after I wash off my makeup I realize I didn’t really bring any guy clothes. So I put on jeans and a very feminine striped top and go back out. But twice while in guy mode I got ma’amed! I wasn’t even trying and I wasn’t wearing a bra or any makeup or anything and one guy says to me “Ooh lady, those stripes are working!” And another just says “hello ma’am.” So, I mean, I still have to fly today and I’m not in LA yet, and I’m gross and tired and achy and exhausted. But at least one good thing happened.
I saw Kate Nash in concert tonight and it was amazing. She was great of course, plus the show started with references to Lesley Gore and Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and she had an all lady band. Then several times during the show she talked about empowering young women and the need for more girls in music and the problems with sexism in celebrity culture and misogynists that she meets on the road. Plus she sang a protest song and gave another speech deconstructing traditional beauty standards. It was amazing.
